Tips – How I Would Have Shot It

August 23rd, 2010 garran No comments

If you’re like me you probably bought a DSLR camera before you understood how aperture, ISO and shutter speed worked together to create an exposure value.

This weekend Chef Morimoto of the Food Network’s Iron Chef held a book signing at the mall and the only thing he requested of his fans and spectators was to avoid flash photography – something about it hurting his eyes. I sat and watched as one fan after another hopped onto the stage with their camera in hand, covered their pop-up flash with their palm and took multiple shots only to pause, look down at their camera and back up with a displeased (confused) look on their face.

The longer I sat there the more I started to wonder how their shots were coming out but judging by all the pop-up flashes that were being covered with fingers I assume that the majority of cameras were set to shoot in auto mode – which meant the camera probably opened the lens to the widest aperture (most likely between f3.5 – f5.6) and dragged the shutter (1/45th of a second or slower). My guess:  A lot of blurry or underexposed photos.

If it were me and I had just a few seconds to get the shot I’d set my camera to meter in spot, shoot in shutter priority at 1/100th of  a second with my ISO set to 400.

I chose a relatively quick shutter speed of  1/100th of a second for the sole intention of eliminating any possible motion blur, but this alone wouldn’t allow enough light to reach the senor so I have to compensate by increasing my ISO (camera’s sensitivity to light) to 400-500. The downfall with increasing your ISO is the potential to introduce noise (pixelization) into the photo, however this can be fixed with post-production software whereas a blurry photo can’t.

I decided to shoot this in shutter priority mode knowing that my camera would automatically set my aperture to the widest available stop (f3.5-f5.6) leaving me with one less setting to worry about.

Finally, I set my camera to compute exposure using spot metering mode only so I don’t have to second guess and/or correct improper exposure computed by my camera. With spot metering I don’t have to worry about filling my frame with Chef Morimoto since I’m telling the camera exactly where my subject is within the frame and to compute a neutral exposure based on the “spot”  that I’ve selected. In this case it’s particularity important for my camera to know where my subject resides since Chef Morimoto was positioned 15-feet in front of a water fountain with an skylight directly overhead. Unless I filled the frame with Chef Morimoto I would run the risk of the camera “thinking” that the bright water fountain is my subject and close down my aperture to prevent overexposure.

Here’s an image shot with my phone (Blackberry 9700) which illustrates how my camera tried to pick the best overall exposure using Jamba Juice, the water fountain and Chef Morimoto as exposure reference points. Unfortunately my camera thought that Jamba Juice was my intended subject which resulted in Chef Morimoto being underexposed.

Tia Morales Swimbook Photo Shoot at Ke Iki Beach in Haleiwa, Hawaii

July 20th, 2010 garran No comments

Over the Fourth of July weekend Swimbook took a road trip (by Hawaii standards) to the North Shore of Oahu to film local model Tia Morales on her first photo shoot with Swimbook’s lead photographer, Marc Edward.

Tia started modeling her modeling career in November 2009 and over the past few months she’s made a name for herself within the local industry. Marc acknowledges that Tia’s willingness to learn and grow with each shoot makes her a pleasure to work with and a great addition to Swimbook’s lineup.

Accompanying Tia on her shoot was her boyfriend\musician\makeup artist, James Mares. If you haven’t heard his work you can check him out on Facebook @ James Mares Music.

LV Alberto Swimsuit Photo Shoot at Halona Cove – Honolulu, HI

June 3rd, 2010 garran No comments

The weather didn’t cooperate with us last week when we shot with LV Alberto and instead of trying to force the issue we decided to cut out session short and re-schedule our shoot for another day. But the day didn’t entirely go to waste and we were able to squeeze out a few shots.
